The Gender Summit is a major high-level international symposium held worldwide to promote quality science, technology and innovation (STI) through gender-sensitive approaches such as incorporation of gender dimension (e.g. as determinant of quality of outcomes) in scientific and healthcare research. The evidence presented at past Gender Summits has shown that applying the gender lens is necessary to fully advance innovation and research, with equal benefit for women and men, and thereby contributes to a nation’s intellectual and economic growth. In particular, the recommendations from the GS10 held in Tokyo, May 2017, established that for the effective implementation of the 17 UN SDGs, it is necessary to use the gender dimension to ‘BRIDGE’ the SDGs, people, and STI.

The Gender Summit-Asia Pacific in Singapore (GS-AP 2019) will be held on 27/28 August 2019. In addition to bringing together world’s leading organizations in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) , thought leaders, policy makers and STI experts to Singapore, the GS-AP 2019 could also help promote the inclusion of, and collaborations between, other countries in the Asia Pacific region to advance gender sensitive research, innovation and development.

About GS15

The 2018 Gender Summit in London is 15th in the series and the first for London. Like previous events it is led by influential science institutions, with the Science and Engineering South Consortium of leading universities as the principal partner.

GS15 builds on past discussions and recommendations and tackles fresh gender issues, in the context of new concerns such as: Brexit, impact of climate change, addressing societal challenges; opportunities and consequences of digital transformation, the 4th Industrial Revolution; strengthening societal responsibility and relevance of research and innovation; ensuring the success of the UN Sustainable Development agenda; and managing the interactions between scientific, political and policy agendas in a rapidly changing world.

The Gender Summit is creating regional and global multi-stakeholder communities committed to enhancing scientific excellence by: removing gender bias from science knowledge making; advancing gender equality in science structures and practices; and applying understanding of gender issues to advance more sustainable and effective research and innovation.

The summit, created in 2011, seeks to provide a place where scientists, gender scholars and policy makers can jointly discuss available research evidence and agree where improvements were needed. Originally set up for the European science community, the Gender Summit has subsequently expanded to North America, Africa, and Asia Pacific and become a catalyst for development of communities of researchers, policy makers, and professionals from universities, research institutes, research funding organisations, research journals and science publishers, policy-making bodies, civil society, and industry.
